Get into Golf available now at local courses

Friendship, fresh air and exercise golf has it all…

The Get into Golf campaign, supported by Sport England and funded by the National Lottery, is now making the game more affordable and welcoming than ever before.

Golf is one of the best sports you can play to improve mental and physical wellbeing whatever your age, background or ability. Indeed, Golf’s powerful combination of stress-busting exercise, fresh air and camaradie make it an excellent activity for promoting long term heart health. Here’s how…

It’s better than a fast and furious gym session

Playing a round of golf could be better for you than a quick, intense workout, according to new research from Maastricht University. Scientists looking into the healthiest ratios of activity and inactivity found that doing moderate activity for longer periods of time leads to more significant improvements in blood fats and insulin than an hour of intense exercise. Scientific proof that walking around the golf course for a few hours is healthier than a fast and furious session at the gym…

It keeps you healthy

Playing golf can boost your mental and physical health. A game burns up to 900 calories as well as working your heart and lungs. Research shows that golf, combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle, can reduce your risk of heart disease, stress-related illness, stroke, diabetes and high cholesterol. Doctors recommend that we do at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week and the average game of nine-holes will take you almost up to that quota.

It helps combat stress

Golf is unlike any other sport for building social connections. The handicap system means you can play anybody whatever their age or ability. Research shows that the better our social life and social support the happier and healthier we feel. Taking up a new interest and learning something new is a great way to make new friends as well as spend quality time with those you already have. Playing together gives you a common purpose which in turn triggers positive emotions.

It doesn’t matter whether you’ve never played golf or if you haven’t picked up a club since your school days or an almost-forgotten holiday. You can get started by taking advantage of the beginner courses on offer from the Staffordshire Golf Partnership for only £25 for 5 weeks.

You’ll receive a basic introduction to golf from PGA professionals, together with information about club membership and follow-on coaching opportunities. Equipment will be provided so all you have to do is turn up on the day in comfortable clothing.
