The pressure is on for local cast of ‘Guys and Dolls’, as rehearsals head into the final stages ahead of next months show. From 15th – 19th October the company from Stafford & District Operatic Society will take to the Stafford Gatehouse Theatre stage to present another crowd-pleaser – and tickets are selling fast!
“The show is looking fantastic,” says leading man Tom Gosling “we can’t wait to get up there and perform! ‘Guys and Dolls’ is a great show with some incredible songs that will definitely get you dancing in your seats and everyone will be leaving with a smile on their face!”
Local man Tom, from Chebsey near Eccleshall, steps into the role of the suave Sky Masterson: a big-betting gambler willing to wager on just about anything. When eternal optimist Nathan Detroit finds his underground gambling ring at stake, he has one last shot and challenges Sky to a high stakes bet: he must capture the affections of straight-laced Salvation Army gal Sarah Brown or pay up to the tune of $1000! Their wager soon goes awry when Sky starts falling for Miss Brown – can he repent his sins and be the winner of her heart?
He has been with the Society for nearly a year now, and it’s his first real lead role in a musical.
“It’s been a real challenge, but everyone has been so fantastic and I learnt quickly that, even though we’re not a professional company, everyone gives 110% to the audience every night on the stage. I was so please to be chosen to play Sky for ‘Guys & Dolls’: ‘Luck be a Lady’ has always been one of my favourite songs. I can even remember watching Marlon Brando in the film as a child and thinking “that looks like fun”! But the stage show has so much more too – there is a real energy and feel-good vibe. I think the audiences are going to love it!
Tickets are selling quickly too, which is a real testament to the show and the reputation of the Society – I’ve had to tell my Mum to ring up and book because I don’t want her missing out!”
