Emotions high as Alleynes Academy take to the field

P1060685Alleyne’s Academy Sixth Form rugby team competed in the final of the County
Cup at the end of the season against a very strong Stafford Collegiate team,
at Stone Rugby Club. Sporting their brand new shirts, funded by a bag pack
in Morrison’s and with donations from staff and pupils at Alleyne’s in
memory of Mr Burchall, who tragically passed away earlier in the year and who
was a much loved and respected member of the teaching staff at Alleyne’s.

As the team took to the pitch, optimism and excitement was high. The game was
hugely competitive, physical and very close. A converted try from Will
Denning for Alleynes drew the scores level after an early score from
Stafford. The boys kept going right to the very end and the scores remained
level right until the final minute when Stafford went over in the corner. A
victory for Stafford and heartbreak for Alleyne’s, but the game could have
gone either way.

The commitment and belief shown by Alleyne’s could not have
been faulted. It was very emotional after the game as their former coach ,
Mr Burchell , was very much in the forefront of every players mind. He
really was one of the team and the boys valued him hugely. The team knew
that he was looking down on us and smiling as he always did. As a team we
felt we’d done Sir proud and that’s all I could ask for as captain. The
desire, heart and emotion that were evident before, during and after the
game from Alleyne’s showed how much Mr Burchell meant to us and it was a
pleasure to lead such a wonderful team. (report by team captain,Iain West)
