It is now National Insect Week until 29th June 2014 & various events are happening nationwide in celebration.
You too can join in the fun by celebrating at the Dorothy Clive Garden on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th June 2014 from 10am to 5.30pm at the special fundraising event ‘All About Insects’ being run for families in conjunction with Harper Adams University.
This family focused event will include a wide range of educational and fun activities for families including: moth trapping, making mini beast houses, pond dipping, insect crafts, an insect trail including educational stations run by Harper Adams University (including prizes), insect friendly pot and go and an exotic insect show (Sunday only).
Event organiser, Julia Roberts, said,
‘The event will be a fun packed and educational weekend for families, who will have the chance to explore the Dorothy Clive Garden and learn about the many insects which live within it. Both Harper Adams University and the Staffordshire wildlife trust will be taking part and leading activities on the day.’
There will be various activities for children and also a chance to adults to learn too in the series of insect related lectures throughout the weekend led by entomologists for Harper Adams University. Fran Scone, postgraduate research student from Harper Adams University said,
‘Insects are a vital part of our ecosystem and sharing this information with the younger generations is really important. We will also be manning stations on the insect trail, demonstrating moth trapping and other techniques.’
Now in its sixth year and organised by the Royal Entomological Society, the week will see scores of events held throughout the country.
Royal Entomological Society Director of Outreach, Luke Tilley said: “Insects may be small, but they have a huge impact on the natural world. There are a wide range of activities being staged during National Insect Week by local and regional wildlife organisations which will enable children and adults alike to explore the wonderful world of insects for themselves.”
Adults will be admitted at £6.75 each and children at £2 between 5-17. Those children between 0-4 are admitted for free. Tickets are available on the day on the gate.
