The sudden weekend heatwave greeted the runners of this Sunday’s Westbridge 5 race. But despite the high temperatures, 217 runners left Westbridge Park, Stone in conditions more suited to spectating than running to battle with tow paths, lanes and footpaths in this multi-terrain 5-miler.
Winner for the second year running was Ben Gamble of Tipton Harriers in 26:21 with first lady Michelle Buckle of Newcastle Staffs AC in 33:05. Stone Master Marathoners fielded 14 runners with Mick Downes first in for the club in 32:48. First Master Marathoner lady was Rachel Yates in 37:26 with Pam Davies clinching the over-60s prize in a time of 40:13.
Other Master Marathoner finishers were Rich Fain 34:25, Paul Lee 36:23, Paul Phillips 36:49, Nick Boulton 40:28, Richard Shaw 40:38, Anne-Marie Mountford 41:14, Mac McCoig 43:29, Julie Boulton 46:13, Sam Cowap 47:34, Joyce Edwards 49:31 and Anne Griffiths 51:07.
All profits from this year’s Westbridge 5 will go to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire Neonatal Unit. Race Director Amy Gamble said
“It is hoped that £14,000 can be raised during 2014 to buy a cooling mattress to treat babies with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy. The Westbridge 5 will have contributed about £2,000 towards this goal and I’d like to thank all the runners and sponsors of this year’s race”.
