Eccleshall Cricket Club was founded in 1849 and initially played on land off Cross Butts in Eccleshall. It is believed the Club played cricket continuously until 1939 (with a break for the Great war). However, it was not until 1960 that Dr. Ross Harrison and Mr. Mark Carter reformed the Club. The Club played away games for the first season to allow the new square to bed in on The Dogcroft (now the Roy Thomson Memorial Ground). Until circa1980, the Club played friendly cricket on Saturdays and Sundays. In 1981 the Club joined the South Cheshire Alliance league and has never looked back.
The Club is located in one of the most picturesque areas of Eccleshall next to Holy Trinity Church. The Club Chairman, Chris Marshall commented
“I am sure there are quite a few residents in Eccleshall who don’t even know there is a Cricket Club in our wonderful town. Please come and visit us!”
The Club has grown rapidly since joining the North Staffs and South Cheshire Premier League 8 years ago. The Club now has 4 Senior teams including a Ladies Team and 7 Junior teams including 2 Girls’ teams. Membership has grown rapidly and to accommodate the new members the Club built a new state of the art pavilion for the Club members and the community. Development Officer Steve Lightfoot reported,
“The club needed to update its pavilion and after much hard work from all the team the pavilion was completed earlier this year at a cost of almost £300,000, it is unrecognizable compared to the old one!”
The original pavilion was a wartime ordnance hut from Swynnerton and when the builder started work much of the original structure was found to be rotten.
The Pavilion is also used by Eccleshall Youth Club-YoYo and is available for bookings year round. The Club has hosted parties, wakes, christenings, meetings and business conferences. With a bar and a fully fitted kitchen the Club is busy most days of the week with matches and bookings. The Club has the latest HD projectors, a pa system, electronic screens and free wifi.
Other significant investment has been made at the Club over the past five years including a 2-lane practice net, electronic scoreboard and new covers. The Club relies heavily on Sponsors and Vice Presidents to help fund the running of the Club. If you would like to sponsor or support the Club please contact Chris Marshall 07969 404833.
On the field the 1st XI achieved promotion from Division 3A in 2013 and is again challenging for promotion this year. Club Captain Myles Coughlan commented
“We have strengthened our 1st XI significantly over recent years and this has led to much improvement throughout the sides. The 2nd XI is in pole position in their division and the firsts are just 1 point behind Weston CC in division 2A. It is an exciting place to be with success on and off the pitch.”
Chris Marshall said
“The Club is just in the process of putting together a five year plan to ensure we develop the Club professionally and successfully in the coming years. Everyone has been going through a huge learning curve since the pavilion was finished. The Club is ambitious and the members want to see premier cricket at the club in future years. It will be tough to achieve but through hard work and determination, I know we will get there.”
