A series of awards are to be handed out to various organisations in and around the borough for their commitment to helping the environment.
The winners of the 18th annual Green Awards will be announced next month at a ceremony hosted by Mayor of Stafford Borough, Councillor Ray Sutherland.
Local businesses, schools, charities and community groups are amongst those who have entered the competition which recognises and rewards commitment to good environmental practice and sustainable development.
A total of 35 schemes were entered this year including a school setting up an eco garden, and a community group sowing flower beds to aid the local bee population, along with other wildlife and energy conservation projects.
The awards are divided into four categories – Business, Youth and Education, Community and Wellbeing, and Public Sector, with a winner being selected in each.
There are also a number of special prizes handed out to organisations that excel in specific fields ranging from sustainable tourism to innovative transport awards.
Eleven of the entrants are new to the scheme this year, and they will be in contention for the Best Newcomer award. There is also the Green Purse Prize for projects using green business practice to save money or reduce costs.
There will be a presentation from the 2013 winners updating on the success of their schemes since their awards.
Winners from last year include the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust and Caterpillar Foundation for their joint project encouraging hundreds of locals to get actively involved with wildlife conservation in and around Stafford.
Cabinet Member for Environment and Health, Councillor Frank Finlay, said: “Once again we’ve received a number of fantastic entries as part of this scheme, all of which could be worthy winners.
“These awards are a fantastic way to recognise all the good work these organisations do in helping the environment stay green and healthy.”
The awards ceremony is to take place on Thursday 23 October at Stafford Gatehouse Theatre.
