At 11 o’ Clock on Saturday 13th September 2014 Approach will be opening a new café to support dementia carers at their Fenton Haven site on City Road Fenton.
It will open every second Saturday of the month. The opening will be carried out by former Stoke City and England player Mike Pejic who will cut the ribbon at 11.00am to declare the Café open.
The café is designed to support carers who are looking after a loved one affected by dementia. It offers support, information and emotional understanding to show that they are not the only people in such circumstances.
The reason for running it on a Saturday is so that those people who work Monday to Friday, but have a caring responsibility can attend. It will operate along the same lines as our existing cafe service, i.e. as an informal drop in service meeting the needs of carers and the cared for.
The major difference at our Saturday Café is that by pre-arrangement, families and friends will have the additional option of leaving their loved one in the safe hands of professionally trained people who know them, giving them the opportunity to have time to go about their day-to-day lives. This “Take A Break” respite service will be available within the Cafe for individuals already known to the service so appropriate care plans can be in place.
More information can be obtained by calling the Approach Office on 01782 214999.
The connection with Mike Pejic is that his mother has Alzhiemer’s disease and is aware of the impact that the condition has on a family. He sees this idea has a great opportunity to share stories and experiences that in turn will help the carers.
The café has been supported by the Lloyds TSB Foundation who have provided funding to run it.
The full address for the café is

We also have one other existing Saturday Cafés based at Earl’s Court, Miller Street in Newcastle U Lyme that operates on the last Saturday of every month.
