The Lions of Stone were contacted recently by a reasonably new volunteer organisation which  provides services for both Shropshire and Staffordshire hospitals. The Club attended a Zone meeting on Monday 24th November hosted by the Lions Club of Gnosall, where one of the members gave a presentation regarding the work of the BLOOD BIKES.

The volunteers provide a service for hospitals in both Shropshire and Staffordshire transporting various items including blood, plasma, test samples, pharmacy items and donated breast milk for premature babies.

Previously the transportation of these items was done by the hospital courier service using taxis etc.  costing the NHS up to £300 per trip!

The Blood Bike volunteers consist of riders and control staff providing a 24 hour service, when they are on call to respond to requests from the hospitals to take the samples etc. between the pick-up points and the various destinations such as the main hospitals and laboratories in Birmingham.

The volunteers depend on donations to cover their costs, raising money by fundraising etc. Bikes cost in the region of £6-£12,000 with running costs of £8,500pa per bike.
