Direct Recruitment celebrated 20 years in Stone last week with an open door invite to their offices for nibbles, goodie bags and most important of all, cake! Clients old and new called in on the day, and when I arrived it was great to meet a bunch of drivers all swopping tales of life on the roads over the years.

Congratulations to Sue & Karen on their landmark celebration, and here’s to the next 20 years in Stone!

Direct Recruitment (Midlands) Limited first opened its doors for business on 6th March 1995.

Launched by Karen Seiles and Sue Frost, their agency’s first office was in an attic room above The Crown of India. Karen’s speciality was and is payroll, accounts, administration, and the Industrial Division, whilst Sue used her experience and strengths in marketing and relationship building to get face to face with businesses from in and around the Stone area.

Sue also had a background in HGVs (she did at one time hold a full licence) so it was only natural that she would head up a Driving Division and it did not take long before Direct were placing both drivers and industrial staff to many local businesses who were coming back on a day to day basis. In 1997 they had the opportunity to buy out an existing Clerical Agency based in Stone and Karen and Sue absorbed the client and skill base into their existing structure … and now had the opportunity to move to the other agency’s offices above High Street Arcade.

As the business just continued to expand, a new consultant was appointed – and with the industrial division expanding exponentially, they also appointed a new industrial consultant to allow Karen to concentrate on running the back office – the essential backbone of any growing business. Come 2001 they had outgrown their existing offices – fortunately, they were able to knock through to another office suite, on the same floor, to create the commodious facility they still occupy today.

Again, in 2003 they were given the opportunity to buy out an engineering agency based in Newport, Shropshire, and this was to form the basis of their new Engineering Division, which was brought in-house to Stone. Appointing a new Engineering Manager they are now successfully finding permanent placements for engineers in Shropshire, Cheshire, Wales and Staffordshire. In 2005 they saw another potentially lucrative gap in the market, when they launched a Catering Division which supplies bar staff, kitchen porters, cleaners, glass collectors and waiting on staff to catering assistants, chefs, supervisors, and managers.

Never standing still, thanks to an existing client’s suggestion, a new Executive Division was launched, finding placements for Senior Management & Directors. This was started in 2008, and has grown to become an intrinsic part of Direct Recruitment’s offer. However, with the arrival of 2013 Karen and Sue saw the need to restructure, adding a Second Tier stand-alone recruitment agency – Eurodrive Recruitment. By now, the Driving Division was full to bursting with clients. There was also (as still is the case) an alarming shortage of experienced HGV drivers which was having a detrimental effect to the transport industry as a whole, not just in the UK but also in Europe.

To this day, Sue is very passionate about finding the right drivers for the job in hand, and knows how important it is to complete 100% the deliveries for clients and Eurodrive Recruitment is still providing an essential backup of drivers as the shortage of drivers continues to plague the industry. 2013 also saw the launch of a New Jaupt Training Centre; initially it was for CPC Qualifications that had to be completed by 9th September 2014.

Clients also showed an interest in the new training facilities, and additional training can now be offered. And as a result of demand, DR clients can now use the Training rooms for interviewing potential candidates. Direct Recruitment have also formed an excellent business partnership with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service for a variety of additional training which is held at their Head Quarters in Stone, Staffordshire.

When asked by the Gazette, Karen and Sue simply cannot believe they have been established 20 years; they are now one of the longest trading independent agencies within the whole of Staffordshire and have developed an enviable client portfolio thanks not only to their longevity, but also to an outstanding track record of providing a bespoke high quality people and service.

As Sue told the Gazette …

“We are very open and honest with our customers and candidates – we believe 100% in transparency – and have a dedicated team of professional consultants that genuinely care about helping both candidates and clients, and will always go that extra mile to help where they can. This personal approach creates extremely positive word of mouth and, as a result, we are constantly approached by local people who have heard that we are an excellent agency to work for. This manifests itself in to us having a very large pool of reliable, loyal and committed staff from our drivers and industrial workers through to clerical and executive personnel. Whilst we are adaptable, Direct Recruitment (Midlands) Limited will continue to be a specialist provider to Manufacturing and Logistic Industries.”
