A superb season has seen Stone rugby club, lead by their ever hard-working captain John Bekalo, enjoy the most successful year in the club’s recent history.

Stone started off the season with a 29-0 victory over Cannock, back to back wins ensued and Stone began to gain momentum. Huge wins against local sides Newport 3rds and Trentham, 56-0 and 86-12 respectively, put Stone into top spot in the league, and this is where they would remain all season.

With the league theirs to lose, Stone switched focus to a cup tie against Eccleshall. The annually competed match for the Duncan Gillard Memorial Trophy is always a spectacle for the locals. This year it saw Stone take home the trophy with a convincing 27-12 victory. Gusty winds and bright sunshine was the setting for the final game of the season, Stone XV travelled to Wolverhampton to take on Essington XV in the Rubery Owen cup final in front of a huge crowd.

Unfortunately, the teamwork that Stone are known for and proud of was not enough to defeat a stronger Essington, in this their first cup tournament. Stone have played with great spirit all season and have two trophy’s to show for it. Scoring a total of 399 points across 17 league games, with only one defeat, Stone clearly showed that they are ready for a bigger challenge. Pre season training is set to start in July, at their ground situated beside the A34, with matches set to start on Saturdays from September.

The club are calling on anyone with a passion for the game to come down and get involved, with a friendly atmosphere players and spectators alike are made to feel welcome. If you are interested in joining the rugby club, visit the website and or Facebook page.
