April 20th 2015 was the 90th anniversary of the first meeting of Aston-by-Stone W.I., and in honour of the event members and guests gathered at the Stone House Hotel to celebrate.
The dinner was organised by Kate Wain, and was the second event in a year of celebrations, Joan Jones having hosted a Coffee Morning at her house last September. This, and sales of bric-a-brac and plants, had funded the gift of a Staffordshire bone china mug with an inscription to mark the event for each Member of the W.I. and for former Committee members.
At the dinner members wore 20s-inspired costumes, and a wonderful array of dress was on show. There was a board of 20s pictures to set the scene, and Members were entertained during the dinner by “Spot the difference” pictures of ladies in 1920s dress.
The after-dinner speaker was Joan Davies of Eccleshall W.I., who gave an informative, inspiring and amusing speech entitled “The trouble with using the ‘yes’ word.” She spoke about the wonderful experiences she has had by saying “yes” when asked to take part in many W.I. events and initiatives, and encouraged us to do the same.
Other activities to celebrate the anniversary are being organised by a special sub-committee, consisting of Kate Wain, Joan Jones, Ann Illidge and Jennie Brockington. A new tablecloth for the President’s table is in progress, with several members contributing; an outing to Moorcroft Pottery will take place, and in September the usual evening meeting will be replaced by an Afternoon Tea. The year of celebrations will end with an Open Meeting next year.
We are hoping to have a float in the Stone Carnival Procession on June 13th to help celebrate this 90th anniversary.
And then we will start to wonder how we can celebrate our Centenary in 2025……
