A very special landmark was reached recently when Mrs Anne Wynn from Walton became the 1,000th member of Stone & District U3A. This is a remarkable tally given the size of the town and it is an achievement well worthy of celebration. How fitting too that it should happen in the 10th year of the organisation’s existence!
To mark the occasion, Mrs Wynn was presented with a special membership certificate and a wonderful bouquet of flowers featuring the blue & yellow of the U3A logo. Chairman, Gwynyth Hart formally welcomed Anne before handing over the commemorative items. The ceremony took place at Oulton Village Hall where the latest recruit attends the Gentle Exercise group led by Ken Fulford who has continuously been a group leader since Stone U3A began. Secretary, Bruce Evans was on hand to photograph the occasion with Membership Secretary, Aidan Coleman and Publicity Officer, Mike Bosson also in attendance.
Mrs Wynn has been a local resident for many years and was persuaded by her cousin (from Cold Meece) to give U3A a try in order to keep active in her autumn years. She is finding the group great fun as well as beneficial both physically and socially. A recent article in a national newspaper described the U3A as “Britain’s most inspiring university”. Weekly fees are less than the price of a cup of coffee with the only significant cost being time and commitment.
Across the 60 or so groups operating in Stone, the students who attend are inspired by the sheer joy of learning alongside like-minded people spurred on by similar needs. For full details, visit the website www.stoneu3a.btck.co.uk or phone Chairman, Gwynyth Hart on 01782-633179
