Few members of Stone & District Probus Club had heard of the charity Blood Bikes but this was put right by Chris Powdrill, Chairman, who gave an illustrated talk at the club’s monthly lunch, held at the Upperhouse, Barlaston on Monday 1st June.
Shropshire and Staffordshire Blood Bikes manned by volunteers undertakes the delivery of blood, either in the form of units needed for an urgent operation, or urgent samples to be taken to a lab for testing, at any time of the day or night.
The service, which compliments the NHS, is available to hospitals in Staffordshire and Shropshire. The Staffordshire and Shropshire branch was set up five years ago and currently has 100 highly trained bikers who have the use of nine adapted motor bikes paid for by charitable donations.
Following the talk, a cheque for the work of the charity was presented to Chris Powdrill by Probus Club President, David Swann.
