Another splendid achievement inspired by the Discovery Award took place a little earlier in the summer when Janice Shipley—as part of her Silver Level—walked the entire 82 mile length of the Dales Way from Skipton to Bowness. In the true spirit of U3A cross-fertilisation, she was accompanied by two members of the Walking Group, John & Jean Evans.

The 7 day trek was successfully achieved despite adverse weather on several occasions with strong winds making the steep climbs even more demanding. Spectacular scenery was still enjoyed as of course the route takes in famous landmarks such as Bolton Abbey, Lake Windermere and the Ribblehead Viaduct.

Unsurprisingly Janice feels proud of the achievement and reports that

“it was great fun and a personal challenge; we met some lovely people along the way. Of course I couldn’t have managed without my fellow walkers who were brilliant company.”
