No change is good news
A rail exclusive: there’s a direct train service between Stone and Birmingham’s revamped New Street Station – but you won’t find it in the timetables!
Railway buff Jon Heal from North Staffs Rail Passenger Group has done some clever sleuthing and worked out that London Midland is running two trains on weekdays and one on Saturdays linking the two places direct.
On weekday mornings, a train leaves Crewe at 6.35am, calls at Stone at 7.04am, then Stafford and arrives in Birmingham at 8.05am
On weekday evenings, a train leaves Birmingham at 7.01pm, calling at Stafford, then Stone at 7.56pm, continuing to Stoke and Crewe.
On Saturday evenings, a Birmingham to Crewe train leaves Birmingham at 8.36pm, calling at Stafford then Stone at 9.21pm.
“The service is split between two timetables, with one bit showing the trains running from Stone to Stafford and the other showing them running from Stafford to Birmingham, but with no mention of Stone,“ Jon reveals. “So unless you knew the two bits are the same train, you might not ask!”
Tickets for these services to Birmingham are available as normal online, with services for these train times shown as direct.
“These are not phantom trains,” Jon insists, “please spread the news about them – and try them yourself!”
