Stockingford 2 – Stone Dominoes Ladies 2

Injury hit Stone travelled to Nuneaton based Stockingford in their second league game of the season. Stone started shaky and Stockingford were pressuring from the off. Even with the amount of possession Stockingford had, there were no real attempts on goal. One shot was fired in after a Stockingford corner looping over Keeper Vikki Garners head, only for left back Simone Kelsall to control with her chest and volley out off the line.

20minutes in, Stone settled down and began to retain possession and began to pressure the Stockingford defence. After the first attack from Kerry McCourt and Hannah Perry Stockingford looked nervous at the back. Both wingers Tammi Bennett and Kerry McCourt began to play more and worked constantly up and down the line creating chances for strikers Hannah Perry and Mollie Prime. A corner was awarded to the Dominoes and Hayley Mason headed just past the post.

Soon after, another corner came in from Kerry McCourt, the ball was cleared to the feet of McCourt who fired the ball low, Hannah Perry on hand to tap the ball into the back of the net making it 1-0 to the Dominoes. Half time 1-0. Hayley Mason got her head onto another quality corner from McCourt however the goal was disallowed as another Stone player had impeded the keeper.

The second half saw a much more attacking Stockingford and with a change around in midfield, saw Nat Price come on Jules Kendrick step back into left back and Simone Kelsall come off. The Stockingford midfield were strong and won most balls in the centre of the park, after some quick passing in the midfield their number 8 took a long range shot and fired it into the back of the net, giving Garner no chance of getting near it. 1-1.

Soon after, the dominoes were creating more chances, Tammi Bennett with a couple of opportunities, Mason strong in the air on corners however the second Stone goal came from Hannah Perry after a long range shot curled over the keepers head into the top corner making it 2-1.

With having roll on and off substitutions another saw Kelsall return to the field and slotting back into left back, Kendrick pushed up into midfield and Hannah Perry came off after a decent game netting two goals. This gave the Dominoes a formation change to 4-5-1 however still the Stockingford midfield still worked harder and wanted it more.

Pushing forward and giving Stone’s defence loads of pressure. Stockingford were on top of the game, passing round the middle and getting the ball to their strikers, however centre half Becky Arnold controlled the dominoes side from the back which cut out most of the Stockingford attacks. Again the Stockingford midfielder ran through the defence and took a shot which trickled into the right corner of the back of the net. 2-2

Stone had to really dig in for the last 5minutes both teams had their chances to clinch the winner. Stone had a corner with 1 minute left however Mason who looked dangerous in the air again, couldn’t hit the target. The game ended 2-2 with the dominoes disappointed to not take all 3 points, however with players out through injuries and players on the pitch carrying knocks a point was better than losing the game.

Player of the match was centre half Becky Arnold, she talked constantly to the back 3, made some quality challenges and had another brilliant game in defence.
