Wyrley v Stone FA Cup 2nd Round‏

Wyrley Ladies FC 2 – Stone Dominoes 2 AET (Stone Win 3-2 on penalties)

The Dominoes visited a strong Wyrley side and knew they would be in for a tough game. Stone pressed from the off with strikers Mollie Prime and Jules Kendrick chasing every ball down leaving defenders with no time on the ball. The Midfield pressed in behind cutting off any short passes so forcing Wyrley with the long balls which the Dominoes defence dealt with. In the first 5 minutes Mollie Prime broke free from the defence and fired a shot just wide of the target. Soon after right winger Lydia Bennion came close with a long range effort which was caught by the Wyrley keeper.

Straight from this Wyrley broke into Stones half and the dominoes gave away a free kick in a dangerous area. The Wyrley striker stepped up but the Dominoes keeper Charlotte Perry managed to save the ball easily. Possession was pretty equal during the first half both teams passing and moving the ball well. On the 25th minute Kerry McCourt had a long range effort smash the cross bar for the defender to clear for a corner.

Stone looked dangerous in the air and central defender Hayley Mason fired a header just wide of the post. Just on the stroke of half time Stone had another corner. Kerry McCourt launched another excellent ball into the area which Wyrley didn’t clear, it fell to the feet of Jules Kendrick who calmly had time to control and find the back of the net. Half time 0-1.

After the break both teams had their share of possession and chances on goal. Everyone on the pitch worked tirelessly on and off the ball for their team. Wyrley had a chance blocked by right back Bethan Woodings however Woodings became injured from this and went off, making way for Hannah Perry to slot in as striker and Mollie Prime and Lyd Bennion to move back into right midfield and defence.

Just after this change Stone seemed to take their foot off the gas and allowed Wyrley to get some decent shooting opportunities, however Charlott Perry pulled off two wonderful saves keeping the dominoes at 1-0. Stone soon settled and Prime was close to getting Stones 2nd of the game, however the keeper was on form. Wyrley broke quickly and after miscommunication in defence, the Wyrley striker was left unmarked for an easy tap in for the equaliser.

Stone picked themselves up a gear and began again to dig even deeper for their second goal. Another corner was awarded for Stone and with Mason heavily marked up jumped Hannah Perry to head home making it 2-1 to the dominoes. With 10 minutes left striker Jules Kendrick made way for Natalie Price to come on in midfield. However Stone again switched off and gave Wyrley a chance, Luckily left back Simone Kelsall was in the right position to clear off the line.

Minutes after Wyrley worked the ball around the Dominoes defence and made the score 2-2. Wyrley were on top of the game for the last 5minutes of the game and after a hand ball in the area, Wyrley were awarded a penalty. As Stone thought their chance had gone, the Wyrley player missed the penalty and with seconds to go, Extra time was looming.

Extra time came and both teams were equal in possession, penalties looked almost certain. There were hardly any chances created as both teams were tiring after such an effort made by all during the 90minutes prior. Wyrley took their first penalty and Charlotte Perry dived to the right saving the first shot. Kerry McCourt soon followed for the dominoes giving the keeper no chance slotting it into the right hand corner 0-1.

Wyrley 2nd penalty was on target and Perry got her knee to it but went in. 1-1. Lydia Bennion made it 1-2 to the Dominoes with a very calm penalty into the bottom corner. Wyrleys 3rd penalty was saved again by Perry as it was hit directly at her keeping the score at 1-2. Hannah Perry stepped up for the Dominoes however the keeper pulled off a save keeping the score at 1-2. Wyrley scored their 4th penalty to make it 2-2. Nat Price stepped up for Stones 4th penalty and made the score 2-3

The last Wyrley penalty was saved again by Perry giving Dominoes the win and putting them into the third round of the FA Cup. Player of the match was Lauren Ward.
