8Ball.co.uk keeps This Is England ‘90 Looking Authentic
Stone-based t-shirt company, 8Ball.co.uk, has played a leading role in keeping the latest instalment of the ‘This Is England’ franchise authentic by supplying specially designed and created garments for key characters and crucial scenes within the show.
8Ball.co.uk and The Treatment DTG, its production company, were initially approached by the show’s costume designer to create two t-shirts for the characters Flip & Higgy. However, the production designers were presented with a continuity problem when they were unable to find duplicates of the specialist 1990’s clothing items they had procured from vintage shops.
8Ball and The Treatment DTG were able to remedy this thanks to their exceptional production facilities and print capabilities. A combination of high resolution scanners and Photoshop were used to create large enough pieces of repeat patterns to print, which could then be sampled, signed off and put into production.
1200dpi printers also meant that things like dirt, wash faded and bobble effects could all be recreated, meaning continuity no longer became a problem, even if the clothing needed to become ripped or bloody in any fight scenes. This process was crucial in helping the show maintain the authentic look that it has been famed for.
Thanks to its contribution to the show, 8Ball.co.uk was also asked to create t-shirts that were worn at the wrap party by the cast and crew of the show – including a baby and a dog.
Richard Flanagan, Founder and MD of 8Ball.co.uk said,
“This was a tremendously exciting project to be a part of, and it really did push our production and printing capabilities to the limits. Shane Meadows, the director, has a very fluid directing style which can mean that scripts get changed at the very last minute and production deadlines can sometimes be less than 24 hours, so we had to work around the clock to get our products out of the door.
“We know ‘This Is England’ has a loyal following, and part of the appeal is how authentic the shows stay to the time periods in which they are set. Obviously the costumes worn by the characters plays an integral role in maintaining that authenticity, and we were grateful for the opportunity to contribute to that.”
