The Stoke and Endon Chernobyl Children’s Project [CCP] group is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary. In 1996 John and Julie Gater from Endon watched a television programme about the fate of children affected by the aftermath of world’s biggest nuclear disaster in Chernobyl in 1986. They discovered that Linda Walker had set up a national organization that invited children in remission from cancer or living in heavily contaminated areas in Belarus – where most of the nuclear fallout had occurred – for recuperative holidays to the UK. John and Julie, who had four young children then, looked at each other and decided that they could help.

They set up the Endon and Stoke branch of the Chernobyl Children’s Project in 1995 and have been running one of CCP’s most successful groups in the UK. Local families got involved in hosting over 500 children and teenagers since then; others got involved in volunteering in various capacities: organizing activities; fundraising; goodwill transports of medicines and other much needed items to Belarus. CCP has since expanded its activities to initiating and supporting projects in Belarus to improve the lives of sick children: set up hospices and children’s homes, training of carers, doctors and so on.

To celebrate its imminent 20th anniversary, the Stoke and Endon Group have organized a presentation of its activities, to raise awareness of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster that still affect the health of children in Belarus, where cancer and other disorders still occur disproportionately. Doctors are very clear that a four-week recuperative holiday in non-contaminated surroundings can improve damaged immune systems for up to two years.

This presentation is open to everybody, whether you are just curious, interested in hosting, or may have some spare time to volunteer. The Endon and Stoke group consists of a very varied group of enthusiastic people, some of whom have been involved almost from the very beginning.

Just to illustrate how much the involvement of CCP Endon and Stoke Group meant to some of our guests, in this case mothers and young children, who were hosted in May this year:

“A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO THE CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S PROJECT AND TO ALL THE HOST FAMILIES FOR THE WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO SEE SUCH A BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY AS ENGLAND. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR GIVING MOTHERS THIS OPPORTUNITY (with their young children). WE HAD A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY WHICH OUR SOULS AND BODIES NEEDED”
(Olga and her son Elissei)

‘I WOULD LIKE TO EXPRESS MY DEEP GRATITUDE TO THE PEOPLE WHO PRESENTED US WITH SUCH A WONDERFUL AND UNFORGETTABLE HOLIDAY! TY SON WAS SO DELIGHTED WITH THE TRIP – NO WORDS CAN DESCRIBE HIS DELIGHT. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO POINT OUT THE ATTENTION AND WARMTH WITH WHICH OUR ENGLISH HOSTS AND FRIENDS MET US. WE FELT THEIR INTEREST IN OUR FATE, WE FELT THEIR WARMTH DURING OUR VISIT. EVERY FAMILY HAS BECOME VERY DEAR TO US. THIS HOLIDAY WAS INVIGORATIVE
BOTH MORALLY AND PHYSICALLY. YOUR ATTENTION AND THE BEAUTY OF THE COUNTRY, YOUR LOVE AND WARMTH HELPED US RECHARGE OUR BATTERIES.”
(Anna and son Anton)
“THIS UNFORGETTABLE TRIP TO ENGLAND FILLED US WITH A LOT OF IMPRESSIONS. ATTENTIVE AND SYMPATHETIC PEOPLE, THE GENEROSITY AND CARE OF THE HOST FAMILIES LEFT A DEEP IMPRESSION IN OUR HEARTS. WE ARE VERY GRATEFUL TO CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S PROJECT, TO THE ENDON AND STOKE GROUP FOR THE WONDERFUL HOLIDAY AND REHABILITATION OF THE CHILDREN AND THEIR MOTHERS.”
