A national finals slot is at stake for two Stafford Grammar School hockey teams as they prepare to take on the best teams across the Midlands in the England Schools’ Championships.
The under-14s and under-18s have each overcome the first hurdle in their quest to challenge the cream of the nation, after winning through their zonal competitions. The younger outfit travelled to Denstone College, where they got their campaign on track with a 2-0 win against the hosts and a 3-0 victory over Leek-based Westwood College. Despite losing 2-1 to Newcastle-under-Lyme School they topped the table to book a trip to Warwick for the Midlands finals this month.
Meanwhile Stafford Grammar’s under-18s have drawn sides from Ellesmere, Loughborough and Repton in their regional play-off event in Derbyshire. The girls were runners-up in the zonal round and join group winners, Denstone, in the next qualifying stage.
