In a week of remembrance for those who lost their lives in the Battle of the Somme, Christ Church Academy pupils Rhodri Ellis and Ben Moss accompanied by their Head of Humanities, Mr Kieran Healey spent 3 days in France and Belgium.

Amongst the many activities to commemorate the sacrifice of the soldiers who fought, the boys visited Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery and the grave of Ben’s great great uncle, Peter Lovelady. As well this, they laid tributes at the Menin Gate Memorial for Stoke City footballer Lee Roose and the thousands of soldiers who died on foreign soil.

Year 8 Pupil Ben Moss said

‘I was completely astonished by the number of graves that were actually there. Although I never met my uncle in person I am proud to have visited him as part of our trip.’

To mark the memorable journey, the boys filmed a short documentary of their trip; this has recently been featured on Radio Stoke.
