Aston Marina is the ‘big cheese’ in Staffordshire!

Stone farm shop and deli Aston Marina is celebrating its cheese counter once again being named among the top 10 in the country. The marina, which last ranked in the nationwide top 10 back in 2012, will now go forward as a finalist in the Cheese Counter of the Year Award category of the 2015 World Cheese Awards, with the winner set to be announced at Birmingham’s BBC Good Food Show on 26th November.

And it’s not only as a nominee that the marina will be represented at the World Cheese Awards. Director Helen Webb, who holds a Diploma in Cheese from the Guild of Fine Food, and Farm Shop Manager Gill Howe – a self-confessed ‘Curd Nerd’ with years of experience – have been invited to join the expert panel that will sample and judge some of the finest cheeses in the world. Helen says:

“This is a real double whammy for the Marina – we’re naturally delighted to be recognised among the top 10 cheese counters in the country, but to be invited to join the judging panel is a huge honour. Both Gill and I are real cheese lovers, so we’re very excited at the prospect of sampling all those delicious cheeses.”

Aston Marina’s cheese counter stocks anywhere between 60-70 British and Continental cheeses at any one time; including local varieties from the Staffordshire Cheese Company & Belton Farm in Shropshire. With Christmas on the horizon, the selection is at its peak with highlights including Vacherin Mont D’or, which is only made for 5 months of the year, and last year’s Supreme Champion at the World Cheese Awards, Colston Bassett Stilton from the Vale of Belvoir.

Cheese lovers seeking inspiration, meanwhile, will no doubt be interested in the marina’s Thursday, 3rd December Cheese & Wine Evening – with 8 world cheeses and fine wines to taste alongside canapés, tickets are just £12 per person.
