The Carers Hub, a new service for carers and their families in Staffordshire, marked its official opening this month.Carers joined dignitaries from Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent councils, Hub staff and local partners including Stoke City Football Club and Crossroads at a special launch event on Friday November 20th.

Two celebrations were held simultaneously at the Hub locations in Stafford and Stoke-on-Trent and there was be a third event exclusively for young carers on thee Saturday morning (November 21), packed with games and activities.
The first of its kind operating nationally, the Carers Hub provides a single point of access to all support services available across Staffordshire and Stoke. As well as the two drop in centres, carers can find information and support through up to 40 outreach locations, by phone and online through a dedicated website and social media.

Two inspirational local carers were chosen to officially open the Hub, with Jane Sutton – mother of cancer sufferer Stephen Sutton, whose Facebook blog raised more than £3m for charity – cutting the ribbon at the Hub in Stafford’s Madford Retail Park and carer Fred Twemlow at the Carers Hub in Albion Street, Hanley. Fred, 75, is a carer for his wife.

Jagdeep Soor, Manager of The Carers Hub, said:
“Carers perform one of the most important roles in society, and you only have to meet people like Fred Twemlow and Jane Sutton to understand that. However, far too many carers cope with this responsibility alone, to the point that it can affect their own health and wellbeing. It is our mission to reach those carers who may not realise there is help available to them.”

The Carers Hub, which has been running since October 1, is a joint initiative by Staffordshire County Council and Stoke-on-Trent City Council targeted at carers of all ages in the community. Public services provider PeoplePlus was awarded a £1.4m contract to work with organisations across the county to make it easier and fairer for carers to get the tailored help and support they need.

Carers who would like to join one of the launch parties should contact The Carers Hub on telephone 0330 1231937 or by email on carershub@peopleplus.co.uk.
