Starting on 21st February Chris Salmon, a dedicated young man from Staffordshire, is running 13 half marathons in 13 weeks (hopefully in under 1300 minutes) to raise money for the Stone-based charity STING – Staffordshire’s Therapeutic Independent Neurological Group.
This challenge will start in Blackpool and finish in Chester in May, and will include events in London, Silverstone and locally in Stafford. Chris is a Stock & Systems Analyst at Wincanton – the Stafford logistics company which distributes deliveries for Screwfix throughout the country.
Last April, Wincanton chose to support STING as its Charity of the Year and so far over £14,000 has been raised through a range of fundraising activities.
STING – Staffordshire’s Therapeutic Independent Neurological Group – works to support anybody in the area with a neurological condition, which includes multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and many other conditions. The group operates out of Unit 22b on Whitebridge Estate in Stone.
Chris was part of the team from Wincanton who completed the 2015 Great Birmingham Run for STING, though his latest challenge far out-weighs anything he has previously attempted. Chris, 27, started running six years ago in order to lose weight. He lost 5½ stones, and raised over £1000 by running three ½ marathons – but is now taking on an even bigger challenge!
“I felt like contributing in my own way by creating this challenge in order to help raise money and awareness for the wonderful charity, STING, as I know a few people affected with neurological disorders. My mother is the closest, who has suffered from fibromyalgia for many years, a friend I attended school with suffered a stroke at a very young age, and the aunt of one of my closest friends suffers from multiple sclerosis.
With neurological disorders including such a wide range issues, it is hard for us not to be affected by it somehow, whether it is personally, or through a friend or family member. I hope that by doing this challenge, I can gain some well-deserved recognition for this excellent charity!”
Chris is hoping to raise £5000 from his challenge, and sponsors can pledge on his Local Giving page under Sting’s Lucky 13.
