Burton Albion 5 – Stone Dominoes Ladies 0
Stone took their biggest league loss of the season on Sunday against league leaders Burton Albion. Stone started positively and both teams had equal amounts of possession. Left winger Tammi Bennett beat her player for pace down the wing and took a shot just off target. Burtons long balls into the Stone defence were soon cut out with Lauren Ward and Hayley Mason proving a force to be reckoned with. Burton were given their first goal after a miscommunication, leaving the player free to tap into the back of the net, much against the run of play.
Soon after another Burton goal came, however Stone battled to give themselves chances to get off the mark. Hannah Waffle was through on goal but was soon knocked off the ball before her shot was taken. Mollie Prime also beat her player for pace and was through on goal too but wasn’t too much trouble for the keeper.
Half time 2-0 to Burton.
After the break, Burton were with the wind. Stone managed to keep the ball low with some great link up play between the attackers and midfield. Substitutions were made, Simone Kelsall and Nat Price came on for Bethan Woodings and Jules Kendrick, soon followed by Nat Williams, Vikki Garner and Laura Baskerville. A third quality goal came from a long range effort from the midfield to make it 3-0. Stone pulled themselves together and soon began to dominate play. Against the wind, Stone pressed forward, Nat Price and Nat Williams linking up and giving Striker Vikki Garner a through ball, Garner couldt quite get to it before the keeper. Another through ball from Laura Baskerville who had a brilliant game coming off the subs bench.
Burton tried to hit Stone on the break, trying down their left wing however right back Simone Kelsall cut everything out. Stone continued pressuring the Burton defence and were awarded with a corner. Nat Price floated a quality ball in, with Hayley Mason heading toward the goal, however a defender cleared off the line, followed by a quick goalmouth scramble Burton managed to clear the ball.
In the last 10minutes, Burton hit two phenomenal shots from long range making the final score 5-0 to Burton. Players of the match Siobhan Haynes and Lauren Ward.
Burton are looking favourites to win the league with only losing 1 out of their 9 games. Stone are sat in 4th place with only having played 7games and aiming to finish league runners up, quite a big aim for the newly promoted side however with the quality in the squad its very much possible.
