Stone Dominoes LFC 0 – Stoke City Ladies 8

Stone Dominoes ladies took on FA Women’s Premier League team Stoke City Ladies in the semi-final of the Staffordshire County Cup. Stoke are the best team in Staffordshire by far, winning the last 7 County Cup finals. The Dominoes knew they were in for a tough game, and with players out through illness and a few other carrying knocks made it even more challenging for the team.

From the start, Stoke showed their dominance with possession making the stone team work off the ball for 70% of the first 10 minutes. Stone’s Strikers closed the defence and Hannah Perry gave the Stoke team a shock when she closed the keeper down unfortunately not able to keep the ball in over the back line. The first three Stoke goals came in quick succession, with Stone not looking after the ball when in possession, however after this point, Stone began to play football around the Stoke team rather than just lumping the ball forward.

Vikki Garner and Hannah Perry held the ball up well as strikers, giving it out to the wingers Kerry McCourt and Bethan Woodings who both played well out wide, tracking back with the Stokes full backs. Central midfielders Tammi Bennett and Jules Kendrick worked tirelessly closing down the midfield three and tried to protect the back 4 as much as possible. The Dominoes back four consisted of Simone Kelsall, Mollie Prime, Hayley Mason and Lisa Elliott. Mollie who slotted in at centre half fitted in well and it was one of the best defensive performances of the season from the girls. The work rate was immense, challenges from all four prevented even more shots on target from the Stokes strikers.

0-3 half time

Second half and Stone continued to defend, Stoke frustrated with their off target shots and for a while the score stayed at 0-4. Many of the on target shots were saved by on form keeper Charlotte Perry. Stoke continued to pile on the pressure and nearer the end of the game, more goals flew in. Stone kept their heads up and never gave in, which was the main aim for the team against such a strong team.

Stone Dominoes team battled well continuously, the back four controlled by Hayley Mason caught Stoke offside for many of their attacks. Substitutes Nat Williams and Nat Price came on and slotted into their midfield positions and made a great impact. With fresh legs they helped defend but also kept possession too. Overall a good team performance and brilliant team spirit considering the result. Final score 0-8

Player of the match – Charlotte Perry in goal.

Next week Stone can concentrate on the league when they visit Wyrley FC.
