Shrewsbury Juniors 2 – Stone Dominoes Ladies 3

Within minutes of kicking off, the referee instantly stamped his authority onto the game by giving the home team a penalty. Stone Dominoes midfielder nudged the Shrewsbury Striker who fell to the floor looking for the referee to give her a decision. Luck was on the Dominoes side as the penalty taker hit the post and play continued. With heads still unsettled about the penalty decision, Shrewsbury struck again, this time hitting the target and making it 1-0.

Stone responded well and by keeping the ball and playing simple football, Shrewsbury were having to work to get any involvement. A throw in from the right wing from Siobhan Haynes, came in to striker Hannah Perry who controlled and laid it back to Haynes for her to loft it into the box and over the keepers head giving Stone the equaliser. 1-1.

Stones strikers Hannah Perry and Laura Baskerville came to life and started to create havoc in the Shrewsbury defence. However Shrewsbury were quick on the break and the game began to be end to end action. Baskerville broke through the defence after a through ball from the midfield however after taking it around the keeper, a defender managed to get close enough to put her off the shot, narrowly missing the target. A few minutes later Hannah Perry found herself onside after a quality ball from Tammi Bennett however Perry also failed to hit the target. Soon after, Shrewsbury were on the attack and after some quick passing, their striker broke free from the defence leaving her one on one with Charlotte Perry however Perry came out quick and managed a one handed save, pushing the ball out for a corner. The two pacey Shrewsbury strikers were being dealt with well by the Dominoes back four of Elliot, Mason, Prime and Woodings and not only that, the defence were quality when going forward too.

Half time 1-1

Second half saw a more determined Stone side, a couple of changes saw striker Vikki Garner come on and she made a great impact. Garner used her pace to beat the right back, then when nearing the edge of the box she took her shot, firing it passed the goalkeeper and giving the Dominoes the lead. Again Shrewsbury kept digging and play was scrappy at times but both teams had chances to score. Jordan Timmins-Ray coming back from injury looked sharp in the midfield and became a big threat to the Shrewsbury team. Timmins-Ray took on players and gave shooting opportunities for Perry and Garner however nothing troubled the keeper too much.

A corner was awarded for Shrewsbury, the striker bundling the ball into the back of the net, keeper Charlotte Perry unable to move after being held back by a Shrewsbury team mate. An Unfair goal what seemed, however the referee didn’t spot it so it stood. More determined than ever, Stone battled hard for the rest of the half. Stone got an attacking corner, Lauren Ward leapt up for a header but it flew over the bar. Another corner soon came, Nat Price floated a perfect ball into the box, for Laura Baskerville to run onto and header in at the near post giving Stone the lead again. Baskerville who had a quality game for Stone deserved a goal and got it with 5minutes left to go.

A somewhat scrappy performance from the ladies however at times the play was brilliant, attacking players worked well with Perry, Garner, Timmins-Ray and Baskerville linking up brilliantly and putting their own creativity when going forward, following up them Haynes, Ward, Bennett all working hard and showing great fitness compared to Shrewsbury winning the ball back whenever they tried to break. Then the Dominoes defence stood solid, covering for each other should the strikers break from the player who marked them and communicating well between the whole team.

Stone continued to keep the score at 2-3 with everyone putting a shift in. Central Midfielder Nat Price was at the helm of this, controlling the midfield throughout the game, therefore giving herself player of the match.
