Director Helen Webb and Farm Shop Manager Gill Howe of Stone’s Aston Marina are set to join the panel of judges for this year’s prestigious Great Taste Awards.
Often described as the ‘Oscars’ of fine food, the awards cover a huge range of categories and celebrate the very best of British produce. As past winners of several Great Taste accolades – including two last year for its Salmon, Prawn & Dill Fishcake and Chocolate Tiffin recipes – representatives of the Marina were this year invited to sit on the 400-strong team of judges that will assess some 10,000 entries. Helen and Gill’s judging session will take place in Gillingham, Dorset on Monday, 18th April – one of a total of 24 days of judging that will take place over the next three months.
During their day’s judging, Helen and Gill will join fellow judges that include food critics and bigwigs in the food industry to taste and review a selection of entries that may well include beer, cider, fresh meat, cakes, jams, olives, ready meals and desserts – basically any item of food that can be produced! Helen says:
“It’s a huge honour to be invited to judge at the Great Taste Awards. Gill and I were lucky enough to be on the judging panel of the World Cheese Awards last year and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, so we’re really looking forward doing it all again. Although we’re going to have fun, it will be hard work – the judging will be split into morning and afternoon sessions, with us working in teams of 3 or 4 judges. Our role is to taste, assess and identify products who we feel collectively deserve a star rating; providing comments that are recorded electronically to provide feedback to the producer.”
