Atherstone 1 – Stone Dominoes Ladies 7

Atherstone 1 – Stone Dominoes Ladies 7

Stone Dominoes Ladies visited bottom team Atherstone in their last away league game. Stone started brightly and striker Hannah Perry came close within minutes, putting the ball just wide of the post. Atherstone played a very high line and caught Stone offside numerous times in the first half. On 15minutes on the break and against the run of play, Atherstone were in on goal, their striker finishing past Stones keeper Charlotte Perry. 1-0 Atherstone.

Stone picked themselves up and became more structured. Simple two touch passing throughout the pitch made Atherstone work off the ball. Midfielder Bethan Woodings nearly equalised when her long range shot fired back off the post. Nat Price also had a long range effort tipped out for a corner. Strikers Laura Baskerville and Lacey Smith linked up well and created havoc between the Atherstone defence, however still no luck in front of goal. Hannah Perry worked her run around the offside trap and a perfectly timed through ball from Lacey Smith placing the ball perfectly  into the run of Perry, Perry controlled the ball and fired it low  into the back of the net. 1-1.

Stone began to dominate play, another through ball from the midfield down the centre of the pitch towards goal, Bethan Woodings was coming back from an offside position, which threw the Atherstone defence, Woodings playing no part in the play left the ball to go through her legs, for Jules Kendrick to run on to, with a race to the ball Kendrick beat the keeper to it, cheekily chipping it over her head into the open goal. 1-2 to Stone. The woodwork got in the way  a few times for the dominoes after Kendrick flicked the ball on for Lacey Smith to volley, hammering it off the cross bar the ball got cleared by the defence. Bethan Woodings again took a long range shot but this time it hit the crossbar  too after her first shot minutes before hit the post. Laura Baskerville took a  long range shot, and the keeper pulled off a quality save pushing it out for a corner. Simone Kelsall stepped up and whipped the ball in however the Atherstone defence headed it clear.

Another through ball came from a Lacey Smith cross for Hannah Waffle half volley over the keepers head 1-3. Jordan Timmins-Ray was introduced on the left striker role, instantly making an impact, the right back struggled to keep up with her pace and Jordan found herself in a shooting position, firing the ball and making it 1-4 to Stone. Stone’s left and right back Simone Kelsall and Lisa Elliott were able to play a more attacking role than usual and both put in some quality balls in to the box for the strikers to get on the end of. Kelsall found herself on the edge of the box, controlling the ball and lining up her shot the ball narrowly missing the target.

At half time the formation changed, moving to 3 at the back with Lisa Elliott, Hayley Mason and Simone Kelsall, Stone looked more attacking with Mollie Prime and Jordan Timmins-Ray on each wing, both pacey wingers with a decent crossing ability. The midfield three of Kendrick, Price and Baskerville worked tirelessly and with strikers Hannah Perry and Vikki Garner, the team looked strong in going forward. Prime linked up with striker Vikki Garner and after some one touch passing, Prime cut inside and got the Dominoes 5th of the game. Soon after, Stone were on the attack again, Laura Baskerville firing on target, however the defender cleared off the line for a corner. Timmins-Ray took the corner and after a few deflections it landed at Vikki Garners feet, Garner volleyed it with her left foot into the back of the net giving the keeper no chance from such a short distance away 1-6 to Stone.

Stone’s 7th was scored by Central defender Hayley Mason. Mason came up for a corner, the corner was floated in by Jordan Timmins-Ray, Mason broke free from her defender, leaped up and headed past the keeper. Nearing the end of the game more chances came however the keeper did well to keep the scoreline at 7.

Player of the match was the latest edition to the squad Lacey Smith. Lacey’s vision on the ball was tremendous, picking out some quality balls and creating lots of opportunities in front of goal.
