Stone Dominoes Ladies 1 – Shrewsbury Town 3
The Dominoes Ladies faced 5th placed Shrewsbury Town, Shrewsbury also got promoted as runners up from the Staffs league last season. Stone started positive and pressed from the front, forcing errors in the Shrewsbury defence, Nat Price finding herself in front of goal but narrowly missing the target. Shrewsbury settled and Stone gave them much of the possession however in front of goal the back four were rarely tested. Stone, usually ruthless in front of goal, found themselves squandering chances and giving the ball away cheaply making the Shrewsbury team control the game. Left winger Bethan Woodings worked hard up the wing and tracking back when needed. Keeper Vikki Garner came off for Charlotte Perry. Half time 0-0 a very frustrating half considering we looked the better team for spells of play but then totally stepped off the pace for the rest of the half.
Second half saw changes, central midfielders Lauren Ward and Jules Kendrick came on for Lacey Smith and Nat Price and with a talking to at half time, Stone began to show some team spirit. Chances came for the three strikers Hannah Perry, Jordan Timmins-Ray and Laura Baskerville however nothing troubled the keeper. Against the run of play, Shrewsbury broke and after central defender Hayley Mason winning the tackle in the box, both players feet got tangled and the referee decided it was strong enough to give a penalty to the visitors. 0-1 to Shrewsbury placing it into the bottom corner.
Stone again kept heads high and again worked hard keeping the ball, however once again on the break, Shrewsbury’s number 10 who was well over a metre offside, managed to sneak through without notice of the linesman or referee, smashing the ball into the back of the net. 0-2. A rather hard done to Stone again picked themselves up and introduced Nat Williams in place of Laura Baskerville on the right wing. Also moving Mollie Prime out of the back four and up top leaving the dominoes with 3 at the back.
From this Stone looked like they wanted it more, a corner came in from Simone Kelsall gave Jules Kendrick a header however it was blocked by a Shrewsbury defender. Lauren Ward was able to take a shot from outside of the box but fired it wide. The Dominoes goal came from a Hannah Perry run, creating a slight opportunity to shoot, and smashing it into the back of the net. The dominoes were back on top of the game and with it at 1-2 they pressed again. Numerous balls were fired into the box from Bethan Woodings, Lisa Elliott and Simone KElsall, however Shrewsbury dealt with them well. Mollie Prime looked dangerous when on the ball, but after being bundled over numerous times, the referee gave nothing. With luck clearly not on Stones side, some heads went down. Shrewsbury finished off the scoring with a long range effort, deflected off Jules Kendrick whilst blocking the shot, the ball went into the left side of the goal making it 1-3 to Shrewsbury.
Player of the match was Jules Kendrick, after returning from injury she made a difference in the second half in centre midfield. Stone are still sat in 2nd place and visit bottom team Atherstone on Sunday.
