Stone Dominoes Ladies 3 – Shrewsbury Juniors 1
Stone had a change of captaincy just before the game, as both captain and Vice captain were out due to illness and injury, so central defender Hayley Mason stepped up with the armband. The dominoes were on form from the start and with the wind advantage soon started to make the most of striker Hannah Perry’s pace with various balls through the defence for her to run on to. The first goal came from a perfectly timed through ball from midfielder Lacey Smith, for Hannah Perry to time her run missing the offside trap and carefully placing it into the bottom corner. 1-0 to Stone.
Shrewsbury began to pressure the Stone defence however they stood solid, Bethan Woodings was the defensive midfielder protecting the back four of Simone Kelsall, Hayley Mason, Mollie Prime and Lisa Elliott. Mason controlled the back four and gave nothing away in the first half, giving Stone most of the possession. Hannah Perry was soon in front of goal again after another through ball from the midfield, however Perry smashed it over the bar. Half time came and although Stone were producing a positive performance, there was only 1 goal scored, keeping Shrewsbury well in with a chance to gain points.
Second half saw Stone battle against the wind and with Shrewsbury getting more involved in the game, Stone needed to dig deep. Hannah Perry was on target again with a long range effort after a through ball from midfielder Siobhan Haynes 2-0 to the dominoes. Shrewsbury fought back and with two key Shrewsbury players not being picked up, gave Keeper Charlotte Perry not much chance to stop them. 2-1 to Stone. Stone woke up and began to keep the ball, simple passes across the pitch making Shrewsbury work off the ball.
Shrewsbury arrived at the game with the bare 11players, and in the second half went down to 10 after one of the midfielders came off with a wrist injury. The dominoes began to press and with a gap on the right wing, Stones left back Simone Kelsall was able to get forward with no real pressure. Kelsall provided balls in for Laura Baskerville and Vikki Garner however nothing troubled the keeper too much. Kelsall found herself in space on the edge of the box and took a long range shot but the wind swept it wide of the goal.
Siobhan Haynes rounded up the scoring with a long range effort, assisted by the wind the ball looped and curled over the keepers head and into the back of the net. 3-1 to Stone. Stone dominated until the final whistle and Garner, Smith and Timmins-Ray all could have got their names on the scoresheet however the keeper kept them at bay. Player of the match was Mollie Prime for a great display in defence.
The team are still sat in 2nd place behind leaders Burton Albion, with Dominoes having three games left its looking unlikely to take the title however finishing runners up is in their sights. Not a bad effort considering they were newly promoted last season.
