The arrival of winter with darker evenings and less appeal in getting out and about means that, across the vast range of activities on offer with Stone U3A, the emphasis shifts. At this time of year, all indoor sports have resumed so both Kurling and Table Tennis are now in full swing.

Two different Kurling groups play on Tuesday mornings; the 2 hour sessions at Swynnerton Village Hall start at 10am whilst the other group based at Walton Community Centre begins half an hour later.

This lively and tricky game is a variant of curling on ice but played on a wooden floor sliding 3 wheeled Frisbees towards a defined target, though being “nudged” out of the scoring zone is part and parcel of the action. For full details, please phone Val Nevitt on 01785-814250 for Swynnerton or Rob Walker on 01785-814791 for Walton.

There are also two Table Tennis groups on offer. This activity is excellent for fitness and for fun. Equipment is provided though appropriate footwear, with a clear, non-coloured sole, is essential. Experienced players might wish to contact Jack McFarlane on 01785-814389 who leads the Friday group who turn out at Stone Tennis Club at 1.45pm. An intermediate level group runs at Walton Community Centre on Monday mornings at 10am. Full details can be obtained by ringing Barbara Walker on 01785-814791.

Barbara would also like to hear from anyone who might be interested in running a beginners group for which there is considerable demand. No coaching qualifications are needed; as with all U3A groups, enjoyment is the prime motive and there is no distinction between learners and teachers.

This important meeting will take place at Walton Community Centre on Monday November 28th. Elections for several key posts will be amongst the official business. For full details of the AGM or any of the groups currently on offer, visit the website
