Rotary is suggesting to its thousands of members in Shropshire, Staffordshire and parts of the West Midlands that those ‘uncomfortable’ about receiving a government winter fuel payment have an option.
And that, says Rotarian John Sayer, District Governor, is to consider making a donation to the End Polio Now fund.
He said that from his experience there were many members of Rotary clubs throughout the district who did not feel comfortable about receiving the winter fuel payment which can be up to £300.
Those in that position could make the decision to donate it to charity and he proposed End Polio Now.
“This is the major battle to which Rotary worldwide has been committed for over 30 years. The end of that battle is tantalisingly close, but so difficult to achieve.
“Bill Gates has promised that for the foreseeable future the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will treble any donation made by Rotarians to the campaign. This leverage makes any donation we might make unbelievably effective in fighting the disease.
For example, a typical payment of £200 with Gift Aid becomes £250 which with the ‘Gates uplift’ becomes £750. That is enough to vaccinate 3,750 children against this crippling disease.”
He urged Rotarians – and friends of Rotary – to make donations either through individual clubs or direct to Rotary Foundation at Kinwarton Road, Alcester B49 6PB (01789 765411).
