Stone Dominoes 5 – Shrewsbury Juniors 4
Stone knew the game would be hard as the away fixture earlier in the season was tough, however Stone pulled together and pulled off a great all round performance. With Stone having a somewhat cursed goal keeper position, new signing Meg James is the 5th goalkeeper to don the shirt this season. Meg coming out of retirement proved she hadn’t lost her skill and pulled off a couple of match winning saves giving her player of the match.
Stone took the lead with Vikki Garner, a cross from Mollie Prime gave an unmarked Garner time to control and fire into the back of the net 1-0 to Stone. Shrewsbury replied soon after with a strike from their fast striker. Shrewsbury looked to go long every time and with pace upfront, caught Stone off guard and the striker was in on goal, keeper Meg James got her finger tips to the ball but failed to stop the shot 1-1.
The dominoes pressed for another, possession was all Stones with some great one two passing across the whole pitch, tiring the Shrewsbury team. Chances came for midfielders Nat Price, Jules Kendrick and Amy Thompson however all three took their shots to wide of the top right corner. With all the possession and chances the score disappointingly remained at 1-1 at half time.
After the break, the dominoes won back possession and took the lead after a cross from the left from Mollie Prime, the Shrewsbury keeper fumbled the ball giving midfielder Amy Thompson a tap in at the far post 2-1 to Stone. After the restart Shrewsbury went long down the right wing, a cross came in and keeper James fumbled the ball leaving an easy tap in for the striker 2-2.
Stone took it up a gear and regained much of the possession in midfield and began to look dangerous in front of goal. Stone took the lead again after Vikki Garner found herself one on one with the keeper after a through ball from Laura Baskerville, Garner calmly took the ball around the keeper and with defenders closing in, placed the ball into the far left corner 3-2 to Stone. Garner struck again soon after, this time chipping it over the keepers head after beating the offside trap 4-2.
Shrewsbury again put up a fight and with 20minutes to go, they headed home from a corner 4-3 they pressured for another goal, but Stone remained solid, closing down everything and working well as a team, the wave of pressure soon eased and Stone got themselves back into it. Garner again found the back of the net making it 5-3 with 15minutes to go. However Shrewsbury weren’t giving up that easily and again pulled one back after a shot came in from a corner deflecting off a Stone defender 5-4.
With a few minutes to go, Laura Baskerville took the ball down the left wing, Baskerville is known for her tricky feet and skills, so getting the ball off her proved difficult for the Shrewsbury side desperate for an equaliser. The minutes ticked away but with it being close to full time and with Baskerville in the corner holding off a few Shrewsbury players, Shrewsbury finally wont the ball and had a goal kick. Shrewsbury managed to go long and hit their striker, controlling it and laying it off for another player, she hit the back of the net however the linesman spotted the offside so the goal was disallowed much to the relief of Stone who would have been truly disappointed to not take the full 3points from the game after having so much of the possession. With a free kick awarded to Stone they went long and kept possession for the last couple of minutes which gave them the win and all 3 points and keep them at 2nd place in the table with Shrewsbury Town and Wyrley Juniors with games in hand behind them.
TEAM: James, Kelsall, Baldwin, Shacklestone, Jones, Kendrick, Price, Thompson, Baskerville, Prime, Garner
