A little more on Marquetry…
Marquetry is the art of making pictures and enriching other articles of wood with decorative designs and patterns by the skilful use of the grain, figure and colour of wood veneers, the separate parts of the picture or design being cut to shape, assembled and glued to a prepared base board or background. Although the materials most used for this work are thin veneers of wood, other materials may be used.
The Marquetry Society was founded in 1952. It has around 450 members of whom about 20% are from outside UK. It has around twenty groups around the UK where members meet to discuss and further their marquetry skills.
Staffordshire Marquetry Group was founded in 1995 and is affiliated to the Marquetry Society. It has around 35 members from Staffordshire and West Midlands. Its members regularly exhibit at the Marquetry Society’s Annual Exhibitions and have received numerous prestigious awards. Its Founder and Secretary, Quentin Smith, is also the current President of the Marquetry Society.
The Staffordshire Marquetry Group has previously hosted the Society’s Annual Exhibition on three occasions – in 2013 and 2008 at Gladstone Pottery Museum and in 1999 at Spode Pottery.
The Staffordshire Marquetry Group meets from 8-10 pm on Wednesday evenings at the Methodist Church Hall, Stone Road, Eccleshall. New members are always welcome.
