OUT IN THE GARDEN – TIPS FROM OUR EXPERT

Dear Gazette readers,

Spring is finally here. It is starting to get a bit warmer, crocus are in full flower and daffodils’ are starting to appear and you can now start to plan out your garden for the rest of the year. Greenhouse are an amazing place to keep plants during the winter but also a great place to keep any plants that need that extra bit of attention throughout the year. If you want a head start, then a greenhouse enables you to plant fruit and vegetables earlier than you would otherwise.

Your greenhouse:

March may be spring, but it’s still early doors. The cold weather can affect your plants, keeping them in the warmth of your greenhouse may be your best option to ensure they are still healthy come the warmer period and don’t get caught by a late frost.  If you have mild loving plants in your greenhouse, put them outside during the day and bring them back inside in for the evening. Keeping your greenhouse clean and tidy will ensure you have more space for seed sowing and space on the potting bench to maneuver compost and pots.

Fruit garden:

Everyone enjoys fruit, its healthy, a quick snack and full of energy. Growing the fruit however takes a lot of energy and time but the results are worth it.  Strawberries may take time to grow but having your very own Strawberry patch is worth it, you can’t beat strawberries and cream in the summer. They prefer to be planted in the sun and out of the wind so the greenhouse is a perfect location, to give them an early start.  Now is the perfect time to plant apple, cherry and fruit trees in a sunny, sheltered spot. If you plant a ‘Family’ apple tree they will give you three different varieties of apple on one tree a great option if you are limited for space.

Vegetables:

Growing your own vegetables is also a great option to extend your garden’s produce as you can grow food for your own consumption. Peppers, aborigines and cucumbers are just some of the options of vegetables you can easily grow in your greenhouse.

Please don’t hesitate to call me if you would like to enquire about any of the above. If you would like any help, advice or supply of any fruit, vegetable plants or greenhouses then look no further.
