News from Sandon WI

The March meeting of Sandon WI, was a Members Meeting, organised and run by members to give the committee a night off to relax and enjoy a meeting with no work.

Pauline Corder was acting President, Rachel Simpson was secretary, Judy Goodson was Treasurer and Storm Barratt was The Tea Lady.

Sitting at tables of 4 or 5 the meeting was presented as a play with two acts with an interval between.

Act 1.

Scene 1 It’s (show!) Business, Pauline asked if members had read the minutes and signed them as a correct record. Rachel then gave all the information about forthcoming events. Judy gave the financial statement.

Scene 2 Quizzy Wizzy – Let’s Get Busy. Quiz sheets had been placed on all the tables to be completed during the evening. This was a quiz with a difference, we were given the Answers and had work out what the Question was!!!

Scene 3 Crafty Sew’n Sew Rachel had prepared some oval shapes of coloured felt and showed us how to make a small Heart Shaped Gift Basket as Mother’s Day and Easter are approaching. This was done by folding the oval in half and weaving the

two pieces together, a handle was glued in place, there were lots of different decorations on the table to make the baskets pretty.

Storm then organised the helpers all wearing their pretty aprons, to serve the tea and cakes at the tables, milk jugs, sugar, plates and serviettes were put out together with plates of delicious cakes and tea or coffee was served.

Act 2.

Scene 1 Mother Knows Best Pauline then read a poem which had been written by a much loved former member, Sue Jerrett, all about ‘Breast Feeding’ being best for babies.

Scene 2 The Guest Speaker was then introduced, Professor Gordon, is an expert on the History of Gin!! The professor bustled in slightly unsteadily she put her bottles and glass on the table and slumped into her chair. Storm was the presenter and poured a little water!! into the glass and passed it along the table. The professor began telling us about all the Legislation and Gin Laws which parliament had passed in the 18th and 19th centuries. After each sentence she took a sip and gradually she slurred her words and continued talking until she had to be helped off the stage and out of the hall. A very funny sketch by Pauline and Storm.

Scene 3 The Finale Judy read a letter to Hazel, who had celebrated her 70th birthday at the weekend, from her children, a very poignant letter asking have we always appreciated how much you have done for us and to say Thank You.

Storm brought a birthday cake out and we all sang Happy Birthday

Table 2 won the quiz with 13/15 right answers, the raffle was draw and the evening’s entertainment was over.

A huge thanks to Pauline, Rachel, Judy and Storm for organising everything and all the members who helped wash up and tidy the hall was given by Maureen Shone on behalf of the committee
