From the ‘Pitter Patter of Tiny Hooves’ to ‘The Thundering of Cloven Hooves’
Spring at Blithbury Reindeer Lodge
The beautiful herd of Reindeer here at Blithbury are now enjoying a well-earned rest after the busy festive season. With the glorious weather we’ve experienced lately thoughts of Christmas are a long way away and the Reindeer can now spend time in the fields.
Spring can also be a busy time in the Reindeer year; their bodies go through lots of changes. The majority of the herd have now lost their antlers and they are in the process of growing new ones. The Reindeer are all losing their winter coats and while they are growing their nice summer coats they really don’t look their best, you could say they are definitely having a bad hair day!
The biggest changes are experienced by the females of the herd, many are now expectant mums. May is traditionally the start of calving so we are looking forward to the safe arrival of the new additions in a few weeks time.
We open our gates to the public at specific times during the year, and this Easter Saturday we’re opening for one day only to do something a little bit different.
We’re having a day at the ‘Reindeer Races’, a day at the races like no other! You won’t need a fancy hat – but we’re encouraging Easter Bonnets.
Reindeer racing is a popular and very competitive sport in parts Scandinavia where Reindeers pull sleighs and sprint over the snow. We don’t have the snow, but our Reindeer will run on a designated track around the farm. There will be four races at intervals during the day and each race will consist of five Reindeer. If you haven’t seen it before, it’s fast & furious!
Members of the public will have the opportunity to meet and greet the runners and pick a winner before each race. We’ve got a bouncy castle, face paint, fun games and an activity trail – with a small prize for each child on completion. Bookings can be made by email or at the ticket office on arrival.
We’ll open our gates again in June, Meet the Babies is an annual event held at Blithbury Reindeer Lodge which gives the public the opportunity to see all the reindeer calves born during the calving season.
More details for this event will be available at www.blithhburyreindeerlodge.co.uk shortly.
