Year 8’s experience a tale of two queens

In the final week of March Year 8 pupils from Christ Church Academy visited Tutbury Castle to hear first accounts of their lives from Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I.

Castle curator, Lesley Smith, took on the role of these queens and told her account of their lives, successes and failures. Dressed in full Elizabethan dress and make up including a dress weighing 4 and a half stone she completed Q&A sessions as each queen before allowing the children to decide who really was the greater monarch.

Pupils also got to learn and handle medieval weaponry and tour the castle grounds. Staff at the castle commented on the superb behaviour and knowledge of our pupils which capped off two magical and memorable days of learning.
