STOCKJUDGING SUCCESS FOR ECCLESHALL’S DAN WEAVER

On Sunday 30th April The Staffordshire YFC Young Stockjudge and Stockman of the Year Competition took place by kind permission of the Robinson Family at Oxclose Farm, Grange Lane, Lichfield. Competitors were required to judge 4 rings of animals, Dairy cows, Breeding Ewes, Butchers Lambs and Beef Cattle, place them and give positive comparative reasons to the master judges.  The overall winners on the day were as follows:

Overall Senior Member – 1st Jake Manning, Lichfield YFC; 2nd Peter James, Leek YFC and 3rd John Wilson, Uttoxeter JNFU..

Overall Intermediate Member – 1st Hannah Britland, Uttoxeter JNFU; 2nd Rob Mollatt, Uttoxeter JNFU; and 3rdSally Leese, Eccleshall YFC.

Overall Junior Member – 1st Dan Weaver, Eccleshall YFC; 2nd Meg Barnes, Leek YFC and 3rd Rob Gray, Lichfield.

Once the team points had been combined, the clubs were positioned as follows:

Junior Overall Young Stockjudge Team of the Year – 1st Lichfield YFC; 2nd Leek YFC and 3rd Eccleshall YFC.

Overall Stockman of the Year Team (Intermediates and Seniors combined and the Overall Team with all points combined – 1st Eccleshall YFC; 2nd Leek YFC and 3rd Uttoxeter JNFU.

Stockjudging is one of the many competitions organised by Staffordshire YFC and gives members the opportunity to utilise their skills with regards to judging and understanding of the make-up of an animal, market demands, and communication, observation and presentation skills which are transferrable in their future career or education path.  Competitors who were placed individually in the Overall Competition were also awarded prize money which is kindly sponsored by the Staffordshire and Birmingham Agricultural Society.

A composite team made up of the highest placed competitors in each again category will go forward and represent Staffordshire at the West Midland Area eliminator on Sunday 23rd July, which Staffordshire YFC are hosting this year.

Dairy Stockjudging Results

 Seven of the Staffordshire YFC clubs took part in the County Dairy Stockjudging Competition, kindly hosted by Chris & Isobel Wilson at New Thorn Tree Farm, Marchington on Thursday 13thApril.  Teams consisting of six members judged rings of Friesian Dairy Cows, placing them in orders of merit and giving reasons to the master judges.

 This skilled competition, one of the many Staffordshire YFC run throughout the year, helps members with observation, their understanding of the make-up of the animal, market demands, communication and presentation skills.  The Junior members judge, place and give reasons on 4 animals, the Intermediate members judge, place and give reasons on 6 animals and the Senior members judge, place and give reasons on 4 animals as well as using the linear method of assessing characteristics.

After a great evening with a high standard of cows to judge and highly competitive members taking part, the overall results were Uttoxeter JNFU taking 1st place, coming in joint second were Eccleshall, Leek and Waterhouses YFC.    Individually, members will go forward to represent Staffordshire at the NFYFC Finals being held on Thursday 12th July at the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate.  They will be as follows: Seniors Sammie Wilson, Eccleshall YFC and Will Gallimore, Uttoxeter JNFU; Intermediates – Ben Sales, Leek YFC and Robert Mollatt, Uttoxeter JNFU; Juniors – Peter Cotton, Waterhouses YFC and Chloe Boothby, Uttoxeter JNFU.

 The evening was concluded with the presentation of awards along with refreshments of filled jacket potatoes, kindly sponsored by HJ Lea Oakes.
