On with the onesies at Bishop Lonsdale CofE Academy for type 1 diabetes charity!

Thumbs up from Jessica and Callum

Bishop Lonsdale Cof E Academy in Eccleshall is to stage a funky and fabulous fundraising event for JDRF – the type 1 diabetes charity – by getting Staff and Pupils to dress in wonderful onesies for the day.

Staff and Pupils from Bishop Lonsdale Cof E Academy will wear a onesie all day on Friday 17th November as part of the nationwide #TypeOnesie campaign. The event will raise awareness of type 1 diabetes and support research into curing the condition.

The #TypeOnesie campaign is in countdown to World Diabetes Day on 14 November. Type 1 diabetes – which is not linked to lifestyle factors such as exercise or diet – affects 400,000 people in the UK including 29,000 children. They must take insulin every day just to stay alive.

‘I have 2 children with Type 1… My son Callum is 9yrs and in Yr 5 and my daughter, Jessica has just turned 11yrs and in Yr6… her last year at Primary School – Bishop Lonsdale CofE Academy Eccleshall Staffordshire, her Teacher/Carer at school who has been incredible on Jessica’s school journey, and of course Callum’s, has suggested as it was Jess’ last year it would be great to fundraise for JDRF- Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation / Diabetes. I’m naturally over the moon and want to make it a huge fundraising success.

She added: ‘Because it is a Primary School we are very excited to do the ‘Onesie for Type Onesie’ day, this is a JDRF Theme as the children will find it fun, however it is going to be on the Friday of World Diabetes Week (17th) There are around 240 children in our school! The children range from 4-11years. I will go in and talk about family life to the children with Jessica and Callum, I have a Paediatric Diabetes Nurse coming to talk to the children, we are designing a blue handprint Tree that I feel can represent the growing knowledge of Type 1 in the community 🙂

We also have Rufus the JDRF mascot coming in from the Midlands Fundraising Headquarters! On top of all that, we have a song written by my father Iain Sutherland, who is a professional songwriter and has written a song for this event and World Diabetes Day – ‘Let’s Get It Done!’ – it can be watched on YouTube now; the children will sing it at our fundraiser. The Best Western Plus Stoke-on-Trent Moat House is also supporting us and JDRF with the Staff fundraising and Wearing their Onesies too!’

Participants are encouraged to share their photos with the Press and Facebook and generally spread the word. The onesie craze began after celebrities including Rihanna and the boys of One Direction were seen sporting them – it is estimated that three million Britons have a onesie in their wardrobe!

Karen Addington, CEO of JDRF said:

“Those who live with type 1 diabetes – and their families – do a great job of getting on with their lives. But it is a very challenging condition. #TypeOnesie is a great way to have fun while also raising awareness and funds for an important cause.”

JDRF is encouraging people across the country to be a #TypeOnesie this year, by wearing a onesie on or close to World Diabetes Day.
