The weather is still totally unpredictable, but nevertheless, as the daylight hours start to increase, you should see your garden start to come alive again! February is all about preparation for Spring, including the cutting, pruning and stooling.
The best time to transplant your deciduous trees and bushes is between Bonfire Night and Valentine’s Day, so do be aware that you only have a few weeks left to do so! The benefit of moving your plants now is to give them the chance to establish their roots before Summer begins – when the leaves and foliage start to grow back. As soon as you notice the buds begin to swell, unfortunately, you are too late for the move!
Regarding planting new shrubs and trees, February is also the ideal time. As long as the ground is not frozen, and you keep the new plant well-watered, your plants will become established and beautiful come Summer.
You always need some plants that look great, to give that extra bit of colour and interest this month. Some of my favourites for February are; Hamamelis, a variety I particularly like is ‘mollis’ this has a beautiful scent and lovely bright yellow flower. Another plant for this time of year is the simple crocus, these beautiful little flowers add a wonderful splash of colour and the stamens are edible. There are many other pretty shrubs and plants that you can have in your garden that can give your garden the wow factor, even at this time of the year!
You’ve probably forgotten about your lawn over Winter but as the weather starts to warm you may need to think about digging out your lawn-mower again. Remember to only mow your grass when it is dry and your soil firm. You will need to set your mower blades higher than you would Summer as if you cut the lawn too low, you may cause damage.
My final tip for this week is to turn your compost pile! Turning the pile frequently puts more oxygen into the pile and will speed the process along.
