HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL takes on a fresh, new life when it appears onstage at the Stafford Gatehouse Theatre this July. A younger generation has rediscovered the optimistic spirit of this infectious musical and multi NODA Award winning MYTS (MUSICAL YOUTH THEATRE STAFFORD) are proud to let their voices be heard, with a message that is not just for kids, but for everyone.
MYTS was founded in March 2007 by Musical Theatre Stafford (then Stafford Operatic Society) and aims to foster a love of musical theatre, singing, acting, dancing and performing in children between the ages of 8 and 18. Through skills based training, creative workshops and annual fully-staged productions and concerts, MYTS strives to provide a focused, friendly and fun environment that allows the children to develop in both skill and confidence. Since their inception, MYTS have gone from strength to strength, bringing shows like Dr Suess’ Suessical the Musical, Footloose, Les Misrables, and Westside Story to the Gatehouse Theatre, as well as their two NODA (National Operatic & Dramatic Association) Award winning shows Children of Eden in 2011 and Honk! In 2015. MYTS currently have sixty-five members and all are hard at work bringing Disney’s High School Musical to the stage.
Disney’s smash hit movie High School Musical was one of the most watched films in TV history and swept the board in the 2006 awards season, winning the Emmy, Teen Choice, American Music, TV Critics and Billboards Music Awards. And just a year later was adapted for the stage. Followed swiftly by two sequels, High School Musicals 2 and 3 and with a fourth sequel currently rumoured to be in the offing, High School Musical is as popular today as it was twelve years ago. And now Musical Youth Theatre Stafford are set to bring this captivating musical to life once again at the Stafford Gatehouse Theatre. Newcomers to High School Musical will delight in the upbeat music and dance, whilst fans of the film will experience new musical numbers, written just for the stage show.
A modern-day Romeo and Juliette, High School Musical is a story of first love, friendship and acceptance. When basketball team captain and resident jock, Troy discovers that shy, brainy Gabriella, the girl he met singing karaoke on his ski trip, has just enrolled at East High, he’s keen to rekindle their friendship. But their decision to audition for the leads in the high school musical causes mayhem and threatens to disrupt the ‘status quo’ of the school. Could Gabriella and Troy’s unlikely alliance open the door for others to shine as well?
Adapted for stage by David Simpatico and with music written and adapted by Bryan Louiselle, High School Musical the stage version, is true to the original TV movie of the same name and features many of the well-loved songs such as ‘All in this Together’, ‘Status Quo’ and ‘Get’cha Head in the Game’ and is guaranteed to have audiences cheering aloud and dancing in the isles.
Following a third NODA nomination for Best Youth Musical Production in 2017 for their production of Legally Blonde with MYTS last year, Director and choreographer, Hannah Morris and Musical Director Laura Foxcroft, are reveling in working with this talented bunch of local youngsters once again. “It’s such a pleasure to work with such a talented and lovely group of young adults” Morris said, “High School Musical promises to be another fantastic MYTS show and is well worth the watch.”
Staring Alex Young as Troy, and Alex Lewis as Gabriella, Tabby Carr and Charlie Allen-Smith play the super siblings, Sharpay and Ryan Evan and with Aislinn Humphries as Taylor and Jack Foster as Chad, (pictured) these six principles lead an incredibly strong supporting cast and a fantastic ensemble! So Get’cha Head in the Game and come and support these fantastic youngsters and by doing so, support local theatre.
