‘STRICTLY COME DANCING’ FITSTEPS masterclass for Dougie Mac

Over 60 ladies came together on the weekend 23/24 June to create a fun filled afternoon of dance and fitness, in a one-off Masterclass organised by Aby Kate and led by Ian Parker (Fitsteps Team- Head of Training & Development).

Aby Kate has been teaching Fitsteps in and around Stoke on Trent for over 4 & ½ years, and this one-off event was a way of both celebrating Fitsteps but also to raise money for the Dougie Mac Hospice with a charity raffle.

Fitsteps is a dance based fitness class devised by Strictly Stars Ian Waite & Natalie Lowe and Olympic swimmer Mark Foster. The class allows you to dance Ballroom and Latin dances, learning genuine steps seen on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ but with a fun fitness fusion and no partners. With the mixture of elegant dances, up-tempo rhythms this class improves coordination, tone, balance and so much more. If you love to dance it is exercise in disguise and you can #danceyourselffit!

Aby was nominated as a finalist for Fitsteps Instructor 2017 for UK and Ireland which was a lovely way to end the year. She was presented with an award at the Fitsteps Christmas Annual Ball and this is where it gave her the idea to bring a Fitsteps Masterclass to Stoke on Trent. As several masterclasses are held through the year across the UK but never close enough!

The lead up to the day was exciting and the event was a great achievement. The event was held at the Michelin Sports & Conference Centre which created a perfect location for such an event. The ladies all met in the lounge bar and then headed into the sports hall where the ladies danced a fabulous mix of Ballroom and Latin; in the first session, the ladies took part in a masterclass dancing over a dozen different dance styles from Cha Cha to Foxtrot,

Charleston to Viennese Waltz, Jive to rumba. The second session was a technique class where the Tango and Samba was looked at in more depth. Everyone reconvened in the bar for the charity raffle which again was great fun and over 30 prizes won.

The event bought together ladies of all ages and fitness levels but all with a love of dance! Some ladies have been attending classes with Aby Kate since the beginning and some were very much new to the class but despite this the sense of energy and enjoyment in the room was clear to see.

Aby Kate’s mum (Bernie) also attended the event having no Fitsteps experience she still had fun

“I got so lost in the steps and dance styles the time flew I couldn’t do it all but gave it a good go”.

The masterclass was a huge success and all involved had a great time many asking if it can be an annual event! Aby was delighted she could get so many of her ladies together for this dancing event and loved seeing everyone smile and enjoy every minute.

In terms of money raised for the Dougie Mac Hospice Aby Kate is still collecting donations but has exceeded £350.
