Musical Theatre Stafford (formerly Stafford Operatic Society) is shaking things up again just two years after a complete re-brand. For the first time in 94 years, Musical Theatre Stafford (MTS) will be performing a musical revue at the Gatehouse Theatre this October!
Founded by twenty musical theatre enthusiasts in 1922, the society is now over 130 members-strong and continues to go from strength to strength. Musical Theatre Stafford(MTS) and its youth division, Musical Youth Theatre Stafford(MYTS), perform a total of three shows at the Gatehouse Theatre each year and have performed all, bar two, of its 130 plus shows at this venue. And whilst the group have undertaken some more modern musicals in recent years, such as Witches of Eastwick, Spamalot and All Shook Up, this is the first time ever, that they will be performing a musical revue: a two-act show using songs and dances from musicals and tied together by a theme – in this case, a musical!
When MTS decided to try something different for the October show, they approached regular director/choreographer Rachel Miller and Musical Director Liz Talbot, to do the honours. Light the Lights, written, directed, choreographed and featuring Rachel Miller (as director!) takes a tongue-in-cheek look at what is involved in putting on a musical. From the nerves of the auditions to the highs of the grand finale and everything in between, Light the Lights will take the audience on the roller-coaster ride of what it takes to produce a show. With quirky characters from the leading ladies to the dastardly baddie, a dazzling chorus with sublime vocals, jazz hands and the obligatory kick line, there is something in this show for everyone.
Featuring songs from well-known musicals such as 9 to 5, Wicked, The Producers, Gypsy and The Mikado, as well as some lesser known shows like Something Rotten and The Boy from Oz, this eclectic mix of musical genres are woven together with comedic dialogue to create new a show about a show!
President of the Society, Sue Zurawiel, who, along with some of the ‘Old Guard’ will be making a special appearance in this show says,
“Putting on fantastic musicals is the passion of our Society and something that we take great pride in doing well. We are very excited to be taking on the challenge of our first ever musical revue, Light the Lights, it will be very interesting to see how our audiences respond to this new format of show. We expect it to be every bit as good as our past shows and hope that it might give our audience a taste of what goes on behind the scenes during a production. We can guarantee song, dance and sweet romance and most of all, a happy ending!”
Light the Lights plays at the Gatehouse Theatre from Thursday the 18th to Saturday the 20th October.
