Jazz Luminary Wendy Kirkland Announces UK Tour In Support Of Her Critically Acclaimed Album ‘Piano Divas’
Autumn 2018 sees the outstanding pianist and jazz vocalist Wendy Kirkland take to the road, to perform a series of live dates in support of her recent album Piano Divas.
In tribute to the musicians that have inspired her (both legendary and contemporary), Kirkand has carefully curated a selection of songs made famous by the likes of Nina Simone, Diana Krall and Eliane Elias, with some accomplished original material included for good measure.
Though Kirkland has mostly chosen songs recorded by other piano-playing singers, she “wisely avoids any hint of imitating their styles”, as quoted by the influential jazz critic Dave Gelly in The Observer newspaper.
Indeed Wendy Kirkland handles material ranging from Leonard Bernstein to Hank Williams in her own inimitable way, further reinforced by The Observer’s review, which states her to have a “fully fledged vocal style of her own that is more than capable of doing justice to (the) material”.
Her vivacious band consisting of guitarist Pat Sprakes, bassist Paul Jeffries and drummer Steve Smith, expertly enhance the unique arrangements, providing a taste of what it would be like to experience this excellent ensemble of musicians in a live setting.
Now audiences will be able to do just that, as the band performs a series of dates throughout the UK in September and October. The recording of Piano Divas was a meticulous, yet natural process that saw vocals and piano recorded in tandem in order to capture a live feel, second only to witnessing such experienced and talented artists in concert.
With glowing endorsements from critics and fellow musicians alike, including publications such as Jazzwise Magazine and The Sunday Times, and respected artists such as Jim Mullen and Alan Barnes, Wendy Kirkland has also received funding for the forthcoming tour from The Arts Council of England. The Wendy Kirkland Quartet’s live show is wholeheartedly an experience not to be missed!
