Aston-by-Stone WI ladies cook up a treat for Christmas

Christmas means different things to different people, but food is at the heart of the festival for many of the members of Aston-by-Stone WI.

Two members, Anita Murphy and Joan Jones cooked some delicious dishes at their November meeting, which could feature on their festive menu. Both ladies are experienced cooks, having won many prizes in shows, and Joan Jones is a WI national judge for cookery.

A great deal of preparation had gone into the demonstration, which seemed deceptively easy at the time. Dish after dish, both savoury and sweet, was prepared in front of the ladies. There were meat and vegetarian dishes, and toothsome desserts and the two ladies explained every step of the dishes as they prepared them. All were prepared on two small electric rings, with help from the ovens in the wonderful new kitchen in the village hall. The best part, perhaps, was the tasting afterwards – definitely a popular evening!

The competition for the month was to create an edible decoration for the Christmas tree. These will feature on the WI tree to be erected in the church for the Christmas Tree Festival. As well as the edible decorations, members have loaned decorations made by themselves for a ‘crafty’ tree.

The next meeting will be a Christmas celebration for members, but regular meetings resume in January when Aston-by-Stone WI meets on the 9th – their regular second Wednesday – at Aston-by-Stone Village Hall at 7.30pm.
